St. Patrick’s Day – History and Significance

If there’s one Saint that all Irish folk revere no matter their religious inclination, it’s St. Patrick – or, St. Paddy, as he is affectionately known. The Irish have taken their love for St. Patrick so far as to dedicate a whole day of revelry to him that is called St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick is considered the national patron of Ireland and is believed to be the one who brought Christianity to the Celtic pagans of the land. The shamrock has gained significance in Ireland, especially on St. Patrick’s Day, mainly because St. Patrick used it to explain how the Holy Trinity worked, to the pagans at that time. St. Patrick is believed to have died in Ireland and his jawbone has been preserved and is believed to be able to heal the suffering of the infirm.

St. Patrick was believed to have died on March 17 in AD 461, and that is why this date is celebrated. On this day, Ireland celebrates a national holiday with only pubs and restaurants open for service to celebrate the day with mirth and symbolism. The day is celebrated firstly by using a lot of the colour green, which is the national colour. You will find people wearing green clothes and even drinking green beer in pubs in honour of this day. This is called the ‘wearing of the green’ and is the ultimate patriotic symbolism for the Irish.

Another symbol used widely on St. Patrick’s Day is that of the shamrock. The shamrock is believed to be lucky for the Irish and symbolises the Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one of the many teachings of St. Patrick to the Celts. The Irish believe that the shamrock is lucky and pin it to their lapels on St. Patrick’s Day, and even take it wherever they go so that they will be blessed with good fortune.

Leprechauns are also considered lucky for the Irish and they are the wee men who are mischievous and who also symbolised wealth. They are believed to always be chasing rainbows in an effort to get hold of the pot of gold that is believed to exist at the end of each rainbow. They are thought to be unfriendly blokes who work as shoemakers to get along, but if you are wise enough you can catch one of them, though they will try their best to trick you so that they can escape.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated all over the world today, not just in Ireland.
