The Roulette Wheel: Its Function and Importance
Many people may know how to play a game of roulette (it’s quite simple actually), but not too many people have given a thought to how the Roulette Wheel works. It does not matter whether you are on a pleasure trip to one of many Las Vegas-style casinos or you are playing roulette variant on Vegas Mobile Casino. The casino game of Roulette is the same either way. As you read through this article you will get to know the inner workings, function and importance of the Roulette Wheel.
The Difference In Roulette Wheel Layout
The Roulette Wheel layout different from one variant to another. It may appear as if the number arrangement on the wheel is random, but in truth, it is not. What you should know is that the way the numbers are arranged in an American Roulette game is different to how they are arranged in a European Roulette.
In an American Roulette game, you have two-zeros (0 and 00) which are always on a green coloured slot. With numbering from 1 to 36 adding the two-zeros will make the total numbers on the wheel “38”. The sequence of the arranged numbers on an American Roulette wheel in a clockwise fashion appears in this way;
0, 28, 9, 26, 30, 11, 7, 20, 32, 17, 5, 22, 34, 15, 3, 24, 36, 13, 1,
00, 27, 10, 25, 29, 12, 8, 19, 31, 18, 6, 21, 33, 16, 4, 23, 35, 14, 2
Note that because of the two-zeros in an American Roulette, the house edge is doubled at a rate of 5.26%.
In the case of the European Roulette game, you have only one-zero (0). So, there are “37” numbers in total instead of “38” as is the case with American Roulette. This also lowers the house edge which is approximately half of that of the American Roulette variant at 2.7%. The numbers on the European Roulette wheel arranged in a clockwise manner is as follows;
0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10,
5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26
Placing Bets On the Basis Of The Roulette Wheel Layout
In a European styled roulette casino game, you can place your respective bets on the basis of the Roulette Wheel layout. These bets are referred to as “Call” or “Announcement” bets. So, one function of the wheel is to give players betting options. Some of the “Call Bets” you can make include;
- Neighbours Bet: A bet on a total of five numbers appearing consecutively on the wheel.
- Zero Game Bet: This is a bet on the following numbers – 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15
- Neighbours of Zero Bet: This is a bet on the following – 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25
- Orphans Bet: A bet on these numbers 1, 20, 14, 9, 17, 34, 6
Why The Numbers On The Wheel Seem Random
The numbers on the Roulette Wheel appear to be randomly arranged. It seemingly appears as if there is no real logic behind the way the numbers on the wheel are placed (in truth there is some logic to it). The purpose of this is to prevent any form of prejudice during gameplay since roulette is referred to as a game of chance anyway.
You will also notice that the ‘Low’ (1 to 18), as well as ‘High’ (19 to 36), numbers tend to appear close to each other, especially in the European Roulette. This is also done deliberately to make the game appear ‘fair’ with its outcomes. In addition, the odd and even numbers tend to be distributed evenly on the Roulette Wheel.
Finally, on the European wheel, you will be hard-pressed to see more than a couple of odd or even numbers arranged side by side. This is also keeping in line with the logic of making the wheel layout appear completely random to the average roulette player.
